It seems kind of simple to me. If you have a crew of 7 people, you have
1 crew. If you have a crew of 12 people you have 1 crew. In order to
be 1 crew, you stick together and act like 1 crew. You shouldn't split
up into 2 half-crews (however big) unless there is a real emergency.
When you split up 1 crew into 2 half-crews, neither is a crew unless
they have all the resources and independence of a full crew (e.g.,
first aid capability, food, cookware, bearbags/rope, expectation of
fending for themselves, expect that no one will look for them, etc.).
If all of these are satisfied, then you have sister-crews, each fully
capable of (and actually) acting as separate crews. In that case 7
people is enough to manage emergencies. Otherwise, you've just got 2
half crews. If you would ever expect to spend time worrying about or
even thinking about the other half-crew, then neither half-crew is a
crew and shouldn't be on it's own.
After reading the above, I think it's simpler than I've made it
sound....sorry.
One final thought, When you're in that "slow crew" who is left behind,
you may receive a couple messages implicitly from the "fast crew":
1. We don't need you to be part of the crew.
2. Don't count on any support from us. Good luck.
Neither is a very welcome message.
