Some thoughts on the crew staying together.
Philmont is a big challenge. Part of the challenge is for a crew to meet
the physical demands, certainly.
A bigger part of the challenge, however, is for a crew to learn significant
lessons about the Scout Promise and Scout Law. In the Promise ( -- to help
other people at all times -- to keep
myself physically strong and mentally awake --), for example, you can't help
other people in your crew at all times if you have physically separated and
you lose opportunities to be mentally awake as well.
That slow guy may not hike as fast as the guy who would like to run the
entire trek, but he may be
extremely knowledgable about nature and can point out the extraordinary
flora and fauna as you go along to the entire group.
In fact, conduct a Philmont nature challenge with a significant reward for
the
person who succeeds in pointing out the greatest number of natural features
(observed
kinds of rocks, birds, animals, flowers, trees, etc) during the course of
the trek.
Hiking at a steady pace where everyone stays together
allows for better nature observation opportunities as a fast hiker can be a
hiker who makes more noise.
General Norman Schwarzkopf, in his autobiography "It Doesn't Take a Hero",
told the story of his speaking with a young Captain who was leading his men
in a run on base. The men were widely
separated. The captain took pride in the fact that his men were meeting
their physical training goals. Schwarzkopf pointed out that unit cohesion
was an important goal to strive for and that the newer members of his unit
who weren't used to a run and weren't keeping up could feel they were being
looked down upon. A modification of the running procedures was arrived at
where
the training goals were met with the unit staying together and succeeding at
meeting them -- together -- as a unit.
In Scouting the patrol method is a key method of Scouting, dating all the
way back to the first experimental Scout camp at Brownsea Island.
At Philmont a crew -- first and foremost -- is -- a patrol.
Don't ever, ever, ever allow the crew to separate on the trail? Exactly
right.
