My Backpacker magazine annual Gear Guide arrived in Monday's mail. This comes free with a subscription to this excellent publication, which provides backpacking articles, tips and gear comparisons through testing year round. I highly recommend this publication. The Gear Guide alone should be available on newsstands as well.
I recommended the Guide to my youth at last night's troop meeting. Who knows if they want to read this or anything else, as most seem to claim to be "overwhelmed" by homework. All I can do is try. I told them "If your gear is good for backpacking, it is fine for car camping, but not necessarily vice versa". Hundreds of items, including the lightweight hiking books that started this thread, are reviewed, including notations of "Best Buys" and other tips.
Backpacker Magazine's website also contains gear comparisons and links to articles published in the magazine in the past on every item of gear imaginable. See http://www.backpacker.com/gear/0,3436,,00.html
