RE: [Philmont]: JetBoil Stoves and Cleaning

It's not just you. I think you did a great job of summing up the problems
that have the potential of popping up. Philmont has had a few years to work
out the bugs and they have designed it around the crew, not the individual
(or the pair). Between you and Tom, you have put the whole picture together
and it makes no sense to attempt the JetBoil cooking method at Philmont. I
AM very interested in the idea of a single JetBoil for morning coffee. I
don't think it detracts from the crew concept there as I am also the first
one up each day on the trail (some scouts are not even certain I sleep, at
all, since I'm also the last into the tent at night :-).

To me, this is going down a very slippery slope, and I would not advocate
the two-persons-per-stove method at all!

I can see where the *crew* concept at Philmont could fly right out the
window. Now its just "us". Everyone tents in pairs, the food is allocated
in packets for two, each duo has its own stove, etc. etc. Under this
scenario, each pair could fix whatever they choose for a meal without
regards for what anyone else is having, even to the extent of swapping with
other pairs in the *group* (since the crew no longer exists) or raiding Swap
Boxes. And with all the activity going on at the fire ring - six people
rather than two - the potential for an accident is greatly enhanced.

Plus, without the "necessity" for being a crew, the tendency for the group
to split up on the trail is even greater.

Nope, I don't think this is something I would support in our crew, but maybe
that's just me.

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher

Having jet boils and cooking in groups of two just strikes me as very
inefficient. This will mean that everyone is involved in the cooking process
and nobody is available to do the other chores like tents, bearbags, water,
etc. Also, regardless of how carefully you figure the fuel requirements, you
will need to bring extra because if you run out, you are totally out of
luck, there are no other sources for fuel. That can be a lot of fuel to
carry, I'm guessing 3 cans per stove, times 6 stoves equals 18 fuel cans!
It should be a case of what works best for your crew, of course, but
cooking efficiency means the crew has more time to do other things. Besides,
if they are truly a crew, they should cook as a crew. Just my 2 cents. If
you go with the Jetboil plan, please let us know how it works out. New ideas
are always welcome here. Also, please let us know what the expression is on
your Ranger's face when you tell him you are cooking in pairs. Many of us
would like to be there to see this for ourselves.
