Good morning.
Wally said, "I read and still have a copy of Cooper's 1986 Journal. The one phrase that I remember the most was Cooper's description of what it is like to climb Baldy. He said that it was 'A Personal War!!'"
This got me to thinking about my personal war up Baldy. I pulled out my journal. To me, it looks how I felt, breathless. Nothing but the essentials, nouns and verbs.
"Slept better. Took a while to get going - left camp about 8:15 AM (got up at 5:45 AM). Did caterpillar almost three hours. Really wore down and took break shortly before top. Felt like sleeping. Mr. Kuhns and Mr. Smith really encouraged me. Made it to the top of Mt. Baldy about noon. Took pictures. Talked to Philmont geologist - Kevin. Had lunch - high point of trip so far. Made goal! Long hike down south side (up north side). Got to Baldy Town about 3 PM. Took shower and got in dirty clothes. Left about 4 PM. Really uphill, got tired and crabby. OA team gave us some food we could not use.
"Got to camp crabby. Put up bear bag. Washed clothes. Dinner okay. Good thorns, roses and buds. Got cleaned up early.
"High - Baldy.
"Low-dirty, . . . hard physically."
