RE: [Philmont]: wilderness 1st aid question

They will gladly accept Wilderness First Aid instead of Basic First Aid.
However, they only thing they will accept for CPR is a CPR card. Neither
Wilderness First Aid or the Basic first aid courses include CPR
certification. This is standard all the way up the line, even if you are
a certified first responder, you need a separate CPR card. At best,
wilderness First aid will review CPR procedures, that's all. Many
Wilderness First Aid courses require you to either take a CPR course
with them first, make it an additional part of the course with an extra
4 hours, or have a CPR card before the course.
Shameless plug: It always best if everyone on the crew has at least the
first aid training (the stuff they learn through First Class covers more
than the Red Cross Basic First Aid course), but I heartily recommend you
have a few guys take Wilderness First Aid, it is well worth your time,
and should add to your confidence level.
By the way, your timing is great for this question. NOW is the time for
all the Advisors to check the class schedule with their local Red Cross,
Rescue Squad, Schools or whatever to take these courses, you don't want
to leave this until the last minute and be scrambling. Make sure you
check all the dates on those cards and make sure you will be current
during your trek. Some cards are good for 2 years, some for 3. Most CPR
cards are good for two, but I think the Red Cross cards are only good
for one year.
 Happy Hiking,
 Tom
