[philmont] Bear Boxes

If Philmont wants crews to use bear proof canisters, then they should just
charge a little more and provide or rent them out to incoming crews. They
are expensive to buy, particularly for those groups that will never use them
again because their Philmont adventure was a once in a life time experience.
A crew of 12 would have to carry at least 6 of them with all the bulky food
packaging currently provided at Philmont. Likewise, campsites would need
quite a few bear food boxes to store all the food provided for at least the
campsites near food pickup sites.

I agree that bear proof boxes are great, but they too cause Œdisturbances in
the forceš to natural sites. However, I guess it would be better to learn
to ignore the boxes and protect the remaining trees from premature cable and
rope burn death. In 2006 I saw several backcountry campsite groupings where
the bear cables had been ripped from the tree tops and the trees were either
broken off at the top, or had completely fallen to the ground from near
their bases. I didnšt see any of this in 2004.
