Lou:

Your suggestion that "they love to play up the bear problem" is unfortunate, and could lead some to believe that bears at Philmont do not pose a threat. They do. The fact that you didn't see any on your trek may reflect the success of Philmont's bear precautions.

With all the food bulk, there' s no way canisters would work at
Philmont. There's very little repackaging done, and they rely
heavily on bulky carbs - crackers in particular.

I took my own food on my trek in '05, and with the way the food drops
are spaced, I don't think I could have packed all my own stuff in
cannisters. It would take a major overhaul of the entire food system
for them to be able use canisters.

They love to play up the bear problem, but we didn't see any on our
trek. A bag hung correctly is certainly enough protection from the
bears there. They aren't nearly as aggressive as the ones in the
Sierras, where you and I are more familiar. We carry canisters for
our Sierra trips, but I wouldn't want to add that weight to heavy
Phil Phood.
