I have not seen one, either. But on three treks I have seen bear poop
under the cables and had crew tell us that they saw a bear about 100
feet from our campsite. My crew was also in Clear Creek camp lining up
to climb Mt Phillips when a crew that had camped on Phllips came down.
A bear had bitten and scratched a scout in his tent and was circling the
camp during the night. They rerouted us to Red Hills camp for the next
night and we could hear the dogs and horses tracking the bear all during
the night. There was a sump in Red Hills that had been yanked out of
the ground and destroyed by a bear.

Although to some it might seem that the bears are played up, they are in
the area and if we fail to follow good bear procedures unpleasant things
can happen. Take into account the large number of relatively
inexperienced people who do Philmont treks each year and I think they're
only being responsible by emphasizing the importance of bear safety.
