[philmont] Da Bears

Bear Bags & Cannisters are effective in most situations. But Bears are
smart and once they figure out where food is likely to be they will return
and attempt the same method to get more food. As others have said many
problem bears are a result of problem campers, often ignorant or
inexperienced. Phil Bears are no different but I'd like to believe that
Phil campers are. Generally they are more experienced and the ranch makes
sure that you have the knowledge and means to protect your crew against
known hazards, including bears. I've seen bears in '04 and '06. In '04 it
was a cub, we didn't wait for momma to show up ... in '06 we were pretty
concernd because of the dry conditions that reduced the natural food supply
and increased the area a bear must forage, sure enough we literally walked
into one on the trail from North Fork Urraca to Black Mountain. Fortunately
he was as startled as our Crew Leader who managed to say 'bear' at a barely
audible volume as the rest of the crew piled into him. It seems that most
philbears forage for berries and ignore bear bags. I believe that the ranch
is generally conservative and fiscally responsible. This approach benefits
us all in a safe an affordable experience. Problem Bears at Philmont are
rare but not tolerated. Check out Timmy, whose current residence is the
floor of the hunting lodge, a graduate of Philmont "three strikes" program.
Finally I've posted (along with shots of timmy at hunting lodge) shots of a
bear on a cable (photo album, category off the ranch)to demonstrate why you
want *YOUR* bags in the middle of the cable.
