I think the current Jac Shirt, while thinner than the one from my youth, is
still manufactured by WoolRich (USA) and while it may be cheap its anything
but inexpensive - list is about $150 although scoutstuff puts them "on sale"
for about $100 frequently. My last one, bought about 10 years ago, is
marked Made in USA. I searched Woolrich's site but they offer nothing like
the BSA model color wise. There are, however, a bunch of vintage jac shirts
on ebay for under $40.
At Troop 6, we've moved into the 21st century and use Red Fleeces, hooded or
not at the purchase's choice. These have proven to have the same attraction
from the boys that the wool jac shirts did in my youth and just as durable.
We have the Philmont Bull embroidered on the left chest, a bit smaller than
the felt counterpart, but just as effective. My son has worn his fleece just
about every day since returning from the ranch in 2004, it was even the
subject of one of his college essays, the only time he isn't wearing it is
when it gets washed ... which isn't often enough. He has had folks come up
to him and ask about Philmont, recount their trip, and wish him well.
Decent shots on PhilSearch under Black Mountain Camp and Trail Bound Tent
City.

Subject: [philmont] Red Scout Jackets--revisiting a topic here
sometime back someone posted an email about the Red Jackets (wool) sold
at the scout shops and at Northern Tier or somewhere on the East coast.
The posts related to "better" red scout jackets.
The ones that are currently in the scout shops are made in china and are
about as cheap as I've ever seen. The ones referenced in the earlier
posts cost over $100 but were much better quality.
If anyone has any information on this, please let me know.
Thanks
Russ
