[philmont] Cooking Water

We used to carry four quart pots for a couple of reasons. First, they were
easier to pack. I can't tell you how many crews we have seen on the trail
with the big eight quart pot hanging on the outside of a pack, banging away at
every step. The second reason to use four quart pots is that it takes
forever and lots of fuel to heat up an eight quart pot. Just compare the exposed
surface area of the two pots and you will understand. Finally, we got rid of
the eight quart pot because when it is balanced on top of a Coleman Peak I
stove, it is an accident waiting to happening. If it should go over, at a
minimum, you aren't going to have supper. If someone is in the fire ring and it
goes over, you have a medivac off the trail.

Our crew purchased some six quart pots and they seem to work great. We can
put food for six in each pot for the entree and it cooks up pretty quickly.
Since they are teflon coated, they clean up very quickly. My suggestion is
that you buy some of Philmont suppers and use them on your shakedown.

Lots of info like this is contained in the Philmont Advisor's Guide, an
unofficial publication that is available as a MS Word email attachment for a $10
donation to Venturing Crew 1519. Just email me if you are interested.
