They are a small unit, that can't support two crews. They put in to
help out other troops in the council who might not get in, but have
scouts and leaders who wanted to go. In a strange twist, many of our
larger units actually got in, so there isn't the need. We'll take
this smaller troop's boys either with the Council contingents or one
of the other troops.
In 2004 our council sent 6 crews to Philmont (no council
contingents.) 2005, we sent 3 crews to Philmont. In 2006 had no
crews at all get in. 2007 we're sending 7 - including our first two
council contingents.
2008? Well, with our growth in activity we are sending 4 Council
contingents, but we also had 11 other crews awarded to troops and
crews in our council! While we appreciate the enthusiasm, our small
council can't support those numbers. So, we're turning the overage
back in right away to assist others in their planning.
I'm the Council Camping Chair and we've been working on building our
High Adventure program. It seems to be working, but we also know our
limits. We're thrilled to be able to offer a Philmont program to
just about any scout who wants to go, but we also don't want to limit
the experience for other youth by hogging crews we can't really fill.
