As I tell my scouts, backpacking (at Philmont or elsewhere) is an art, not a science. There are a few things, like the requirement to treat water before drinking it, that are mandatory. The method(s) are the art. There are pros and cons to each method and this list is a great place to DISCUSS them. Ultimately, you have to go with the method that best suits your crew. When I drank nearly 4 liters of water between Ponil and Pueblano one hot July day with one stubborn burro slowing things down, I was mighty grateful for a filter that meant I could drink immediately. Would it have killed me to borrow water while I waited for the Polar Pure (pre-Micro-Pure) to work or to just have waited? Nope. Ultimately, my crew opted for the extra weight of our filter, larely because the crew was comfortable with it and liked the instant availability. It was our first trek and we had no first-hand experience with water availibility at Philmont. Will we do the same in '08? Not my call. The crew chief and I will trai
n them on the various methods, and the crew will decide.
