First Trek, 1976, Why the heck do you want to treat the water?
Second Trek, 2002, Crew brought one filter, never left the pack.
Third Trek, 2004, Crew did not carry a filter
Fourth Trek, 2007, Will strongly recommend crew leaves the filter at home,
unless we are on one of the itineraries where we have to drink out of the
slimy green cattle trough that is on the ranch somewhere (or is that an
urban legend.....) YIS. Mike Conkey

First trek – crew carried two filters. Used them twice.
Second trek – crew carried one filter. Never left the pack.
Third trek – crew did not carry a filter.
The trek you are on will and how you plan your water pick up will make a
difference in the amount of water you treat. Some treks have so much
access to treated water that you rarely will have to use the tablets. On
other treks you will have less access to treated water and will have to
either use the Micropur or filters more often.
We found that using polar pure on our earlier treks and Micropur on the
last one simple and easy. So we made the decision not to carry filters.
Yes, I know they are on the Philmont equipment list, but I just do not see
the need to carry something you are not going to use. If you like using
pumps or have a problem with the taste using Micropur, use the filters.
We purchased and used Micropur on some of our shakedowns so everyone was
used exposed to it prior to arrival at Philmont.
