[philmont] Micro Pur Contact Time

I cannot provide Philmont's thoughts, only my own. The water filters and Micropur compliment each other. When crews do not bring filters, we have to give them more Micropur.

Micropur will purify the water, but it will not remove any of the "chunks", and you will have to wait until the water is purified. Philmont has pretty good water available over most of the ranch, but there "could" be times when you would want to have a filter.

"We had some pretty dirty water once at Bent after it rained that we had to strain through our bandannas ". You have answered your own question.

It MIGHT not rain while you are at Philmont, so are you going to leave the rain suit behind?

I now joining the overanalyzing here. Can you provide Philmont's thoughts on bringing water purifiers when they already use Micro Pur? We had some pretty dirty water once at Bent after it rained that we had to strain through our bandannas before we added Polar Pure (in the dark ages). I don't see a real good reason unless it's anything worth doing is worth over doing.

Please note that in the Guidebook to Adventure (pg. 19) each crew is to provide 2 or 3 water purifiers/filters. These are necessary items of equipment, NOT suggested items.

There are so many sources of purified water now at Philmont that you
will rarely need the Micro Pur. I think our ranger told us to wait 30
minutes but as others have posted, there are websites with definitive
information depending upon water temperature. Leave the water filters
at home - they are way too heavy to justify using a couple of times in
a ten day trek.
