81 - (wet year) Bandana and Potable Aqua tabs
84 - (wet year) ditto
00 - (dry year) carried a filter, used it once at Deer Lake Mesa to strain usable liquid from the pea-green yuck in the pond, otherwise used the Polar Pure
02 - (fairly wet year) carried a filter, never used it, used Polar Pure
05 - (fairly wet year) did not carry the filter, used the Micro Pur tabs
08 - ? - If it is another dry year, we will probably carry the filters. If it is moderately wet, we will probably leave them at base camp. It all depends on the itinerary selected and the water board on Day 1.

Everyone here has different lists and different philosophies on personal and crew gear. There are no right answers, and wrong answers only become apparent when someone gets sick or hurt.

I don't remember our ranger in 2005 pushing us to carry our filters. He knew we had them and had decided to leave them at base camp. We also did not get extra Micro Pur tabs because of that decision. We only used the Micro Pur tabs 3 times in 11 trail days. The rest of the water was gained from purified sources.

Bottom line, learn about the areas your itinerary covers, where water is, and what the normal condition of that water is. My filter is only a pound...
