Just a quick thought on the question Don brings up about "why spend the
extra money for a purifier?"
When we were researching water filters for backpacking, there were lots of
options. Of course, there still are. Most of the "better" filters were
higher in price, and given the fact that, in most cases, one gets what they
pay for, rightly so.
When it got right down to decision time, the three I was going to choose
from were the following - the MSR Miniworks filter, PUR Guide (now Katydyn
(sp?) filter and the First Need purifier.
There was no more than $10 - $12 separating them.
A full purifier for a few dollars over a filter? Seemed like a no-brainer
to me. For five years, the First Need has answered the bell everytime, and
it "purifies", not just "filters".
I apologize for the advertisement, but when the statement "why spend the
money on a purifier?" comes up, I just like to state that the difference is
very minimal.
Also for the record, we were on Trek 4 in 2005 and used our purifiers
minimally. We brought two - and I was glad we had two when we needed them.
I don't think we used the tablets until we got to Schaefer's Pass. Maybe in
the greater scheme of things, we could have gotten by without bringing the
purifiers, but each weighs only a pound or a few ounces over a pound and
they worked very well for us.
