The MSRP difference between the bottom line First Need and the
MSR Miniworks is $30. Don't know where you get it with only a
$10 difference. But that isn't where the cost is found.
The response to your point, Pete, is the maintenance cost. It isn't the
up front cost, but when the time comes to replace the element -
and if you don't ever replace the element, the purifier BECOMES
just a filter - the cost of replacement is what makes the cost
difference. At least for those I looked at.
Kind of like buying a color printer for $99 but spending $50 for
the cartridges. Isn't the printer that costs you, its the cartridges.
The replacement filter for the first need is $43. The replacement
element for the Miniworks is $40. How long is the pump to last before
the filter is supposed to go? I'm not that familiar with first need,
but the other purifiers I've looked at the filter lifespan is
measured in the tens of gallons. The rated lifespan for the First
Need is 125 gallons. THe Miniworks is supposed to go 2000 liters,
or about 550 gallons. Over the life of a filter, that
can be a significant savings. One cartridge replacement on the MSR
equals more than three on the First Need. So your maintenance cost
is about $150 for 500 gallons versus about $50 for the MiniWorks.
I have still found no justification for a purifier. I might feel
different as our Kilimanjaro trip gets closer, though.
