[Philmont]: Gifts and Time

The previous discussion concering gifts to Staff members was in response to
a question of what manner of gift was appropriate. Not whether gift giving
itself was.

It was posed that the rule on not accepting gifts of any kind may be one
that is 'conveniently ignored'. I would like to take a more cynical side
and suggest that this is a rule that got suffed into an HR handbook one day.
Carbon copied from Jiffy Lube to Subway to Ernst&Young to IBM. And that
rather than being 'conveniently ignored' that it is more often 'conveniently
enforced'.

Now we are all Boy Scouts here, we all know the oath and the law and the
various other quips that get passed down like KISS and BOHICA and Better to
beg forgiveness than ask permission(BTBFTAP). But I think we also
understand and live the unspoken wisdom to one degree or another.

Somewhere amid that unspoken wisdom is the idea that someone within Scouting
will have a tremendous effect on someone else within Scouting. Often, that
takes time. Weeks. Months. Years even.

When someone gives another person a gift. They are doing it in lieu of
time. They are not saying you did a good job here's a little extra on top
of what you already make. They are saying you have effected me in a
positive way and I want to recognize that, if I had the time to become a
mentor, if I had the time to watch you grow into a fine man or woman, if we
had the time to become friends I would cherish that. But we don't and all I
can offer in return is this little gift to say I am sorry we don't have the
time.

At least thats how I like to characterize it.
