Just returned from our trek. 704-E1 kept their original trek 4 itinerary, no
changes. 704-E2 had trek 20 and was re-routed to South and Central country on
trek 12. Overall a good trek, but we missed Baldy and our only big peak was
Black Mountain. Weather was great. Rain every afternoon except days 5, 9, 10 &
11. Trail traffic was not as heavy as I expected, but the staff camps we hit I
thought were very crowded compared to my previous treks. I expected to see much
more wildlife driven Central and South because of the fires, but we saw very few
deer and only one nuscance bear at Beaubien. It had been 14 years since I last
stayed at Lanberts Mine, a very nice campsite as I recall. This time it was
packed with crews, and the camp sites now have to be the worst I can ever
remember experiencing at Philmont. Water was plentiful except of course between
Clarks Fork and Base Camp. We loaded up at Clarks Fork with everyone carrying 4
quarts plus the crew's additional 12 quarts of capacity. We had no problems but
ran into several crews at Shafers Pass Camp that were not prepared and had to
hike back to Clarks or down the North Fork to find water. The spring at Shafers
Pass was dry but a 24" pipe had been planted above the spring to act as a catch
basin. There was only about 4" of water in it and it was pretty nasty looking.
The highlight for 704-E2 was being on the Tooth of Time about an hour before sun
rise to watch the stars and wait for day light before hiking into Base Camp.
