[Philmont]: PTC Food Complaints

Reflecting back on my Army experience with food prepared by an Army cooking
school, my experience in Scouting pretty much is a mirror of that
experience.

In general, you do not want to sign up for the very first week of Summer
Camp if the camp is a dinning hall type camp. The first week of camp is
when the staff are still trying to get their act together and the kitchen
staff are going through their learning cycle. Since I am in Texas, I wanted
to get to camp fairly early in the camping season, but I learned to stay
away from the first week of camp.

As to Philmont, in general, the dinning halls at both CHQ and PTC get a lot
of first time staffers for their staff, kids that very likely would rather
be out in the back country doing program or being a Ranger, but are sort of
paying their dues by spending their first year as staff for the dinning
halls. I have never been back a second time in any given year, but would
guess that they also may get better at a lot of things as the year goes
along.

However, if I remember right, the Philmont dinning halls do not do very
much actual cooking. I believe that they have a vendor bring food in in
sort of warming treys, the food is already prepared, all they have to do
for the most part is just heat it. That way, they do not need highly
skilled cooks, only people that can follow heating instructions.
