Dan
I hope that you are not talking about your and my council; the National
Capital Area Council, but I think you are. Witholding patches is about adult
control. Despite all the hand waving about "boy led" especially at Philmont
where Rangers will direct their questions to the crew leader instead of the
adult advisor (that causes all sorts of road rage to those advisors who are
playing crew leader), we still see adults in charge. The worst part by
saying that they are witholding patches because they basically expect the
youth members to misbehave on the trip home.
I would fire off a letter to the contingent advisor and the Philmont commitee
asking for a better explanation than your advisor got. Our crews have always
received their patches in a last final ceremony at Philmont, with just the
crew together. It gives the lead advisor an opportunity to recognize the
performance of the young men and women who have traveled the trails together
for the past 10 days.
