I was in Cito in 1967 and do not remember the totem pole carving.
My 1967 trek at Philmont was very similar to today's treks. I have a book
that I purchased at Philmont in 1967 that was published several years
before. Crews used the book to plan out their treks. I believe the option
of each crew planning their treks was coming to an end by the mid 60's. I
do not remember who planned our trek, but my 1967 trek was very similar to
my 2000 trek. In 1967 we went Clarks Fork > Cito > Lambert Mine > Red Hills
> Porcupine > Beaubien (2) > Fish Camp > Craigs > Abreau In 2000, my trek
was Cathedral Rock > Sawmill > Red Hill > Porcupine > Beaubien (2) > Fish
Camp > Abreau > Crater Lake > Shafer Pass.
We barely got in 50 miles in 1967
In 1967, I remember climbing at Cito, Mine tours at Lamber Mine, horse back
riding at Beaubien and fishing at Fish Camp.
John is right - our backpacks weighed less, but I think that was because I
was young, and didn't carry much.
This year I get to go back to Cito.
