John-

Historical info is a good thing.

As to CHQ - you must be right - my co advisor's term for base camp must have meant Cite because . . .
on our last day that year he brought out a B&W photo from '65 of the front entry archway with dozens of boots dangling from it. That afternoon we went over to the entrance, lined up his photo with what we saw - a "Welcome" building was in both views - and took another photo from the exact same spot - now thirty years later. There wasn't much difference.

However, I did mention to him that had he come with us a year earlier he wouldn't have seen the "new" archway and the new "Welcome" complex. Instead of the archway, he would have seen a wire frame sculpture of the map of Philmont or was it the Arrowhead? At any rate it was a very '70s looking thing - many complained about it - it looked entirely out of place with all the adobe etc.( my apologies to whoever constructed it), and was replaced.

Other bits of info I've picked up over the years - the present Trading Post, aka TOTT, was once the dining hall, and the present camp director's house was once the camp office. Most all the buildings at CHQ have had another use at one time or another. A friend of mine who managed the TOTT for many years told me at the time the new laundry complex was being built, that there is, or was, a though of building a new Trading Post, and using the TOTT building for the health lodge.

If you step back from it all - its interesting to see what Scouting's concept of a 'summer camp" has been over the years. Philmont is constantly changing and for the better I believe.

One last factoid - what is inscribed in the concrete floor under the pavilion section of the new "Welcome" center? You'd be surprised as to how many people never look down.

- One point of disagreement with the diary either in recollection or interpretation. CHQ then was as it is now CHQ next to the highway. In fact the "Welcome Information" station back in 1959 was exactly the same small log cabin that was used until 1995. It was then replaced by the present one.
