Re: [Philmont]: Withholding Philmont Arrowhead Patches

I guess it's hard for me to understand the logic of keeping the
arrowhead patches till the scouts return home to prevent them from
losing the patches or to control behavior. These are the same
scouts who have just finished a 11 day backpacking trip. Now if it
has been a trek from HELL, then maybe I could understand where
the adviser was coming from. In our Troop it has always been our
policy to award the patches after the closing campfire. This year
we used the closing fire backdrop in our presentation pictures. This
really added to the arrowhead patch presentation in my opinion.
The only thing that I hold is the group photo to give out when we
arrive back at our home airport. I always carry a folder to carry the
photos home in to prevent them from getting damaged. Another
angle to look at this is that every crew member paid big bucks for
this adventure ( our group paid $1100 each- airfare, fees, etc) As a
parent I would be furious to be told that a patch was withheld from
my child because it was a method to control behavior.
