This should probably not become such a huge deal. While I agree that
holding the patches over the scout's head is not a great way to reward a
scout, how the patches are presented and when should probably be left up to
the advisors and/or the crew leader.
In our case, the patches and photos were held (not withheld) until a troop
meeting right after we returned. The younger scouts just returned from
their summer camp and the older boys from Philmont. After swapping stories
and reflections about the trip, the arrowhead patches were awarded. "Our"
thinking was that, done in front of the troop, this would perpetuate the
desire to grow up in scouting with Philmont as a goal for the younger boys.
In the past our older boys would just come back from Philmont and somewhat
disappear and lose interest in regular scouting. We are trying very hard to
keep our core group of older boys who just came back as role models for the
rest of the boys. Our presentation in front of the troop was an attempt to
make them feel special and recognize their accomplishment. Hopefully they
can share what they learned with the younger scouts.
If you asked any of our crew if they missed out on something by not having
their patches given to them immediately, not one would utter a word. I
really don't think they (we) went to Philmont to get a patch. Mine is nice
and sits right next to the one I earned in 1974. But the memories are what
really matter.
Of course a crew made up from several different troops must be handled
completely differently.
