Re: [Philmont]: Withholding Philmont Arrowhead Patches

We just returned from Philmont on the 14th (Trek and Cavalcade)
and I had to weigh in on this thread. While I agree with the other folks
here regarding withholding patches from the Scouts, occasions unfortunately
arise where, I believe, this threat is valid.

In this sorry case, it was an adult who was threatened with no patch.

On our Trek, we had one adult that was a royal P.I.T.A. (Pain in
the a**). He was demeaning to the Scouts, the other adults, and the topper
was a full scale caniption (sp?) at our Crew Chief on the way from Clark's
Fork to Schaeffer's Pass on our next to last day. I was the head advisor
and my 18 yo son (and veteran of two Philmont treks and numerous Hi-Adv.
trips in our Troop). He laid into my son, using abusive and pitiful
language, acting in a VERY un-Scoutlike manner, and had his wife (who was
in no shape to be there) and two other Scouts reduced to tears because of
his tirade.

After I intervened and my son (whom I have NEVER seen him this
mad) had fired back at him about all his misdeeds, shortcomings, and how he
had become the laughing stock on our Crew (a good buddy of mine and veteran
of 12 Philmont trips warned me about accepting other adults from outside
our Troop. But, did I listen?! Nooooooo!), I told Mr. PITA to either
apologize in front of the whole Crew or no patches. Simple as that.

Did he sputter and stammer and try to make excuses? Sure. Did he
apologize? You bet! But he didn't get his patch until the night before we
were leaving Philmont.

It's unfortunate that I had to resort to this (the rest of the
Crew and the Trek was great), but even though he was a SM, Wood Badge
trained, and a veteran of the Air Force, you sometimes have to "get out the
big stick".
