RE: [Philmont]: Airport transportation

When I was doing this very thing, a budget from So. Cal. to Philmont for a
crew, figuring about 10 people, I came to somewhere between $800-$1000 per
person for the total bill. I got a lot of help, with some real detailed
budgets from other crews that have gone recently, and those look like pretty
reliable numbers.

Don't count out using a train (do you really think Congress will let Amtrak
belly up *this* time?), it can be pretty durn economical compared to
airport-airport plus shuttle rental, and not that much more time, given all
the factors. While I was at PTC, I was informed by Mark Anderson that the
train is reliably 5-7 hours late from the east, and 4-7 hours late from the
west. It was once 12 hours late, and once on time (the Philstaff threw a
party). So the 23 hour train ride from LA turns into about 30 hours. Fare
comes to $190/per person at the moment on www.amtrak.com, but timing is
everything, I've gotten quotes as low as $140 per person. Compare that to
air plus parking plus rental.
