Most likely you have mismatched datum between your GPS and map. Multiple
points consistently off by a fixed amount is a good clue.

Don't put total faith in the maps, either. Or perhaps stated more
accurately, in the trails drawn on the maps. Most of the USGS maps are very
old. New trails are made and old ones can be rerouted, closed, or lost to
overgrowth. Unfortunately I have got myself into jams by trusting the map
more times than I care to admit (What happened to the bridge that was
supposed to be here? :) ) Now, I always review my route with the local
authorities, just to make sure there are no surprises.

I was on 627H1, itinerary 26, which comes in over the Tooth. In logistics
our crew leader was informed that the Phil-maps do not reflect the newer
trail coming down tooth ridge to base camp. The logistics guy mentioned the
trail was significantly longer and showed the crew leader a small map with
the new route. It was an 8.5 x 11" sheet that probably was printed from
some mapping software based on a GPS track. Too bad they didn't issue the
crew a copy.

With this change in mind, one of our adults turned on his GPS at Tooth Ridge
Camp to track the route into base camp. I have not seen this GPS track, but
I believe he said the length was 5.42 miles. This was measured from the
sign post at Tooth Ridge Camp to Services Bldg. It would be interesting to
see where the new route goes in comparison to the old one.
