I heard that the new route from Tooth to Base Camp was needed for two
reasons. First, the old route was eroding badly. Talking to people who
used the old trail said it was like free falling straight down. Scouts
could build up speed going down the hill, and so could water.
The other reason was climbing from Base Camp to the Tooth, the old trail was
very difficult to climb. The newer trail is easier for people who have not
been in the mountains for 10 days.
As for maps, the maps are not updated each winter. I will bet the maps are
updated on a four year cycle or when the old maps are sold out. There will
always be old trails on the map.
