Our 2003 crew is planning on taking the train from South Bend to Raton. We
have decided to go ahead an buy the tickets.
Amtrak's policy (last I talked to them) was that you may purchase the
tickets up to 11 months from the departure date. They have a number of
different prices for each train. For example, there may be 10 seats at
$200...20 additional seats for $300 and the rest of the seats may be $400.
They also have pricing where if an adult purchases a full fare ticket, up
to 2 youth may travel at half price each.
We will be purchasing the best package we can get, the dividing the total
cost by 12.
When we went in 1999, we got off of the train in Chicago for a 3 hour
layover. The porter saw us in uniform and asked if we were going to Ratan.
He led us to a waiting area, suggested a place for our pack line and asked
us to keep 2 persons with the packs at all times.
On the way back to South Bend, the dining car had a breakfast special for
all scouts in uniform.
We were onlyu 3 hours late getting to Philmont, 4 hours late getting back
to South Bend.
