Actually, it never crossed my mind not to let him go. I have heard what a
wonderful experience it is to go to Philmont, both from other scouts and
from my husband (third generation Scoutmaster). What surprised me was the
fact that my son's excitement in January of being eligible to go and us
being financially able to help send him became "This was a mistake - I
don't want to go" a few days before departure. I don't know if it was just
cold feet at the enormity of what he had signed up for, or if his trek
leader had "overprepared" the scouts with serious admonitions to be prepared
for any weather/circumstance/animal/injury/terrain/temperature/etc. He
wasn't the only one to feel this way at the last minute, as I was to later
find out. Obviously, they did just fine while there, and had a ball doing
it. I'm really looking forward to the stories and pictures. Now if the
train would only get her (3 hours late)...
