We're leaving on Amtrak on 8/4. Bought our tickets early, but also bought
trip insurance. Cost averaged about $35 per ticket. Be sure the insurance
carrier will cover this loss. Carrier will have a "watch list" and if
Amtrak is not on that list they will likely cover it. If on their "watch
list" they will probably not cover that risk.
Biggest disadvantage is that if Amtrak fails close to your departure date
you may have a scramble to make other arrangements. At least you will not
be out the $$
