[Philmont]: Packing your sleeping bag in an int frame pack - how ?

Have recently migrated to an internal frame pack, and have a question about
packing your sleeping bag...do most people first put their bag into its
stuff sack before putting it into the sleeping bag compartment of the pack,
or do you simply stuff the bag directly into the pack ???

I ask, because I have been putting my sleeping bag into its stuff sack
first, only to have difficulty getting it to then fit inside the pack
compartment...it would seem like an 'advantage' to have the extra layer of
waterproofing (the stuff sack) for your bag, but maybe it's not really
necessary ???

Thanks, Larry
