[Philmont]: 627H2 Trip Report

I won't go into a lot of details about our trip, unless someone asks, but
I'll share a few highlights.

Weather - the first part of our trip was pretty dry. It clouded up a couple
of afternoons, but only sprinkled for a few minutes. The second half of our
trip was just the opposite. The mornings were cloudy and we had rain most
afternoons. It would dry up a bit late in the afternoon, then start in
again in the middle of eating dinner. A couple of days it rained well into
the night, but just lightly. The last night, at Abreau, it looked like we
were back to dry weather. We got most of our gear and fresh laundry dried
out. Then, true to form, a storm blew in right in the middle of our Mexican
dinner. Luckily, the other advisor had already gone back to camp and
retrieved the last of the laundry. He soon had to take cover under the
dining fly, and was soon flooded out of that. He did some minor drainage on
a couple of tents, and kept everything from flooding. Three of the
campsites weren't so lucky. I estimate we got 2" rain in less than an hour.
The Rayado was up at least 2'. One of the staff members said it was the
worst storm they'd had in 6 years. Earlier in the week we had hail that
looked like snow at Buck Creek.

Itineraries - both of our crews were given their second choice itinerary.
2=>1, 9=>26. Both were happy with what they got. I was in the crew that
had itinerary 1. It was plenty challenging with a day up and over Black,
with rain and hail down the back side into Black Mt. Camp.

Cooking - learned a new cooking technique from our Ranger. I think this
technique was probably prompted from having 2-person meals. It is a NO pot
technique. Mix everything you want in your bowl and add hot water. Most
meals required a cup of water per person, so it was relatively simple.
Cleanup was limited to the individual dishes, not the pot. Since our crew
does a good job of sumping, we had nothing for the yum-yum bag.

Camera - I picked up a Sony Cybershot DSC-P71 the weekend before we left. I
took 2 128M memory sticks along and loaded the camera with AA Lithium
batteries. The batteries lasted the entire trip and I got 92 pictures per
stick at the highest resolution setting. I haven't uploaded the pictures
for printing yet, so I can't vouch for the final picture quality.

Jobs - anyone wanting to work at Philmont should contact the Ranch. Mark
Anderson said at the initial Advisor's meeting that they are short of staff
and we were welcome to stay when we finished our treks. With the North
country opening up, they will need even more help.

I think that's it. I'll expound on anything that is of interest to anyone.
