We too are staying at the Kit Carson Inn the evening before our trek. As
far as dinner goes, your choices are somewhat limited. Simple Simons
serves pizza and the like, but they close at either 7 or 8 pm (I can't
remember which). The Porch deli is across the street from the motel, but I
don't think they serve dinner. The St. James Hotel offers good food, but
is somewhat pricey. Your best bet would be the restaurant at the Kit.
Nothing fancy, but the have chicken-fried steak, burgers, sandwiches, etc.
Everything in Cimarron is within walking distance.
For breakfast, we plan on going to the grocery store the evening before and
picking up some donuts and OJ. Nothing fancy. Philmont is sending a bus
to pick us up at 7:30 am. The earlier you get to Philmont the better,
especially with all the modified treks right now. Get there as early as
possible! (In fact, I will have my personal car since I am coming straight
from a wedding in Wyoming - I'm taking the two crew leaders and the other
lead advisor and we are going in at 7 am to start the check-in process at
the Welcome Center. When the rest of the group arrives, we will be ready
to go.) If you arrive later in the day, or after a large council
contingent, you will be doing a lot of waiting all day long.
Just my advice.
