The food at the Kit is good. I've never had a bad meal
there. Heck's, which is nearby, is good too. I haven't
been impressed by the food at the St. James Hotel but it
may be better now as the place is under new ownership
since I was there last October. Simple Simon's pizza,
which is within walking distance, is open until 8 p.m.
during the summer. Those are probably your only choices
for food at 7 p.m. If you can't work in a meal at Simple
Simon's after your trek, I would opt for the pizza on
arrival.

The buffet breakfast at the Kit is excellent. As somone
stated, The Porch also serves breakfast. So does Heck's.
Although they did several years ago, the St. James
didn't serve breakfast last October. Personally, I would
opt for the buffet at the Kit.

Try for your "free time" in Cimarron after you check in
at Philmont, or after your trek is complete. There are
shuttle buses which will take you into Cimarron and
return you to Philmont. The Cimarron Art Gallery and
Blue Moon Eclectics are nice places to visit. The
Buffalo Nickel is nearby too. The Art Gallery has an old
fashioned soda fountain. Lots of Wood Badge stuff and
jewelry too. The Cree Mee has excellent soft serve ice
cream. The Old Mill Museum is a great place to visit if
you have time.

Try to arrive at Philmont no later than 8 a.m. There are
definite advantages to arriving early, especially with
what is taking place this year.
