This is the forth year of a drought in Philmont, so rain didn't happen. We
got rained on Sunday, but not enough to pull out the raingear. After that,
we got one or two drops a couple times. We never needed our raingear the
entire week.
I brought my daughter, age 8 on this trip. The program for girls age 8-10
is called Chicas. Probably the best thing about the program is the chance
to meet and bond with other kids of the same age/gender. My daughter hooked
up with a 10 year old almost immediately and they became inseperable.
There are few alternatives for the kids younger than 14, so they do what the
program has for them. The activities are pretty much listed in the
guidebook, with pony rides, handicrafts, games, ice cream, day hikes, etc.
The pony rides were a bit of a disappointment. There were 12 chicas, but
only 7 ponies. So, in one session, only 7 of the girls could ride at one
time. Also, if there is lightning or rain, it gets cancelled.
Thursday is all day outing day for all but the smallest kids. Chicas took a
day hike to the stockade, the same place the boy scouts spend their night on
their overnighter.
On Friday, they hiked to T-Rex, so I got a T-Rex patch for my daughter (for
her Y-princesses vest).
Drop off in the morning is 8:20 - the girls usually twirled hula hoops until
everyone arrived and they could start their program. Pickup is 11:30, then
second drop off is 1:20. The girls really enjoyed the hula hoops and
competing with one another trying to keep them up longer/do more hoops, etc.
Afternoon pickup at 4:30. See Part I for the evening programs and brief
discussion of meals.
Regards
Don
