I have a Kelty Redcloud - 5400. I've had it for 2 1/2 years. I am an adult
volunteer/Crew advisor/Asst Scoutmaster - I am 51 yrs old. The Redcloud is
probably the best pack for the money out there. Our local outfitter also
recommends it as probably the best bag for the money. I plan to continue to
use this bags for several years to come.

I'm taking my Kelty Redcloud to Philmont - leaving on August 2 - hopefully
hit some of the re-opened North country. I've used/tested my Kelty Redcloud
locally on two separate 32 mile hikes (Pompano Beach to Miami Beach), on 8
t0 10 mile hikes in the Everglades, and on Weekly Philmont 8-mile practice
hikes. Properly fitted, this is a great bag. The support metal struts are
removable, and you can bend them to conform to the curvature of your back -
so this is a bag that can grow with a young person. The many pockets and
other features are similar to more expensive bags. After pretty intense use,
it is holding up pretty well. The suspension system and load levelers are
great.

Be aware of the following:

It comes in more than one torso length.

You don't wear it "off the rack". You have to remove the metal struts and
bend them accordingly. The instructions show how to do this. It's a piece of
cake - awkward at first - but a piece of cake.

If you are buying this from an outfitter (as opposed to a Sports Authority
type of place where sales people are clue-less for the most part, it is a
good idea for the outfitter to help you and your son with fitting the bag.

Get a nice generic pack cover for it.
