Make sure it fits him well. We just returned my son's RedCloud as the stays
were digging into his hips and it was nearly unbearable on our last trip. I
ended up trading packs with him and although it was more tolerable (more
padding on my hips?!) I found it quite uncomfortable as well. When shopping
for packs, he was more interested in features and those on the RedCloud
were much like the external frame Pacific Crest he took to Philmont in
2001. It was a mistake for him to not put weights in it and wear it around
the store. When we returned the pack, he purchased a Lowe (same as mine and
his brother's) and likes it much better. Another scout on our crew has a
RedCloud and loves it. I hope you get more responses and comments, but I'd
suggest not surprising him with a pack. Take him to the store and have him
try on LOTS of them. I didn't end up with the one I originally set out to
buy either. A good sales rep is a lifesaver when selecting and fitting
packs. Good luck!
Kevin

Please respond to

I am looking at a Kelty Redcloud backpack as a present
for my son's 14th birthday next month. We will be
going on a Philmont trek next August (03) and I am a
little torn between buying him his own and borrowing
one that he has used in the past. I'd like a little
input, any comments, both pro and con for the
Redcloud? (I remember some folks really touting this
particular unit in the past so I was curious if there
was still positive feedback on it.)
Thanks!!
