Another comment I forgot about until reading Signe's post. The Lowe pack
(internal frame) I bought comes in a variety of frame sizes. I am 5'7", my
16 year old who just bought one is 5'8" and my 14 year-old who has one is
5'6". It's a Lowe Alpine Mountaineering and was made especially for
Galyan's, but is very similar to the Scirocco. Technically, this particular
one is sized for women, but works very well for smaller framed men and boys
as well. With the variety of sizes available, he could probably find one
that fits well. I'm not too worried about my sons outgrowing them -- height
just doesn't run in my family!

How big is your son at 14? The Red Cloud is a full-sized, wide width
internal backpack. Unless he is already a good sized young man, I would
hesitate on this pack thinking it might be too big to fit him
comfortably. I had a red cloud & hated for the fact that it was too
wide & unwieldy on my frame. With a 14 year old, I would suggest
waiting until he gets more growth behind him before making an internal
frame purchase.

I am looking at a Kelty Redcloud backpack as a present
for my son's 14th birthday next month. We will be
going on a Philmont trek next August (03) and I am a
little torn between buying him his own and borrowing
one that he has used in the past. I'd like a little
input, any comments, both pro and con for the
Redcloud? (I remember some folks really touting this
particular unit in the past so I was curious if there
was still positive feedback on it.)

Thanks!!
