The food was greatly improved this year. The only negative was
that Philmont increased the calorie content of each meal and there
was actually more food than needed. At our first commissary pick-
up we stripped our meals and reduced the meal weight by 1/4. I
would not recommend stripping meals at basecamp. By waiting to
your first commissary pick-up you have a good gauge of what the
crew will eat. Our Crew Leader went thru each meal with each
crew member telling how much they would eat. The other item this
year was the reduced number of hot breakfasts. This year we only
had two breakfast with oatmeal and one with Cream of Wheat (
UGH- Who ever heard of a southern eating Cream of Wheat. Now
Grits-yes!)

The meals are also packed as two person meals and not four
person meals. This resulted in more meal packages for each meal.
Our ten person crew now had five packages instead of three
packages. In basecamp we were issued five day supply of food 14
meals- 70 food packages. No body in our crew had a pack that
weighed less than 51 lbs. This year my pack was 58 lbs. In 2000 it
was 54 lbs. My oldest son had the heaviest pack at 61 lbs. Plan for
heavier packs this year.

Lunches this year had Tuna Fish, canned ham, canned chicken.
All three items were excellent. Suggested on the Tuna Fish is to
lay the packet down and cut it open on all three sides. It is also
impossible to open it at the top and get the tuna fish out.

I want to go back!!!!!!!
