Re: [Philmont]: Backpack review

Our trek started on 7/2 and we had a training ranger and a trainee ranger.
The trainee had hiked the AT twice and had worked for years in a "outfitter"
store specializing in backpacking. My son is a small 14 year old who bought
a Jansport internal frame pack from Campmor. It was working fine but the
2nd day Darren (the ranger in training) looked at his pack, popped it off
his back and in 20 seconds made about 10 adjustments that totally fit the
pack to my son. I am now a big believer in getting the packs from an outfit
that can fit the pack to the person. We would have been testing and
tweaking all week with mixed results I am sure.

With the increase in food quantities and extra water carried due to dry
conditions, we typically started off with packs weighing around 50 lbs.
Bigger is not better and with that weight on a smaller kid, it better fit
correctly.
