Regarding flying with stoves and fuel bottles-
At the end of May this year I flew American Airlines to Las Vegas to hike
the Grand Canyon from the South Rim to the North Rim and then back again.
We had no problem on the flight to Vegas. On our return the sight of five
backpacks threw up all kinds of red flags. We had to read a list of banned
items and agree that none was in our packs. I also produced the Post Office
receipt for shipping our stoves and bottles to Philmont Scout Ranch (that
didn't really prove anything other than we had shipped something, since the
receipt didn't say what was in the package). It was enough to get our packs
checked in without further inspection.
As we were walking away we saw two backpacks being thoroughly searched.
Their gear was all over a table and the floor.
If you carry stoves and are asked if you have them, as a Scout leader you
will and must do the right thing and say "Yes". Once they know you have
stoves or bottles they will be inspected. They may or may not be
confiscated.
Why take a chance when it is only a slight inconvenience to mail your stoves
and bottles.
JUST GOT BACK FROM PHILMONT YESTERDAY (June 30)!!!
Even with the fires, God's Country is still God's Country! :)
YIS,
Earl Owens
