Depending on you first day hike, you may or may not want to get out at 8
a.m. Our first day hike was relatively short (2-3 miles, but uphill), and
our ranger recommended and set up a 10:00 a.m. departure so we could avoid
all of the morning rush. It worked out great. Gave us time to get up,
take that last shower, etc.

I'd concur (for what it's worth), or the quiker you can get to the
outfitters, and art gallery.
