Depending on you first day hike, you may or may not want to get out at 8 a.m.
Our first day hike was relatively short (2-3 miles, but uphill), and our ranger
recommended and set up a 10:00 a.m. departure so we could avoid all of the morning
rush. It worked out great. Gave us time to get up, take that last shower,
etc.
Comment...
Last year we arrived at the Welcome Center (with 25 other crews - two 13 crew
contingents in six buses pulling up together) at 8 a.m. Our Ranger got us
through everything EXCEPT Logistics in record time - we did not have to wait
anywhere except Logistics. It was 2 or so in the afternoon when we got in there,
one of the last crews for the day. We were assigned a 1:30 or 2:00 (forget which,
and am away from my notes) bus to Ponil Turnaround the next afternoon, which
meant we had the rest of the afternoon as well as all of the next morning to
kill. I assume that the buses were filled in the order that crews went through
Logistics.
One of our other contingent crews that was also going to Ponil Turnaround went
through Logistics earlier and was a assigned the 8:00 bus the next morning.
Which was a real problem for them, as they ended up in lines everywhere in
Base Camp which took them right up to dinner, and then had to get their crew
photo the next morning, before changing out of uniforms and into trail clothes,
final visit to the crew locker, etc.
Most first days on the trail are relatively short, and never have program except
for Ranger Training. A mid-morning bus, if you have a choice, is the best -
a little time to avoid the early morning rush (especially if you are having
your crew picture taken), and still should be at your first camp before the
heat of the day and the afternoon (pray for rain) thunderstorm. But unless
you are in Logistics early, you may not have a choice.
