In addition, you will have 'stuff' to store in your crew lokers at base
camp -- things that you don't need on the trail (duplicate stoves,
street shoes for travelling, a change of clothes for the trip home...)
or that you bought at the trading post before your went out, in case
they ran out of them. Using a duffel allows you to stash your junk in
your bag in the crew locker -- gives you a 'clean plate' to start with
going home. No tape, wrapping, cutting, folding, unsealing to search.

Not to argue, but besides having to have material to repack for the ride
home, if I were inspecting baggage, it would only be more than
suspicious to have plastic-wrapped and duct-taped large packages and
inevitably difficult to open and re-close to inspect..
Zippers work well, and your duffle bag can be used to store your pack in
the garage when you aren't using it..

Our method of packing our packs for the airlines is to place the
packs in 3 mil black plastic yard/leave bags ( I believe they are
around the 35 gal size). We then wrap them with duct tape to keep
them secured. A lot cheaper that duffel bags.
