Mike,
We've used big bags and duct tape before to secure backpacks for the trip
from St. Louis to Philmont. We usually go by train or bus, but that method
should work for air travel too. My personal preference is still a very
large duffle bag or stuff sack. The Airline security folks may
decide to unwrap it to inspect the pack, too, and it would be easier to
put it back in a duffle bag than to re-wrap if that happens.
I also have a contact at American Airlines that can get a sample bag for
you, too, if you are interested (and since you are sort of local).
Our troop, from Boone Trails in St. Charles, has two crews at Philmont now
(722-E3 and 722-E4). Sure wish I was with them!
Enjoy your trek!
Yis (with a bad case of Philmont envy...)
