Been reading my e-mails since returning from Philmont (6/30) and have a few
miscellaneous comments to make.
People often mention bringing spices to add flavor to the meals. On our trek
we felt the dinners were plenty flavorful. Several were hot and spicy - no
additional flavoring needed. Even the mashed potatoes had a strong onion and
garlic flavor. So unless you just enjoy carrying the extra weight, I would
consider leaving the spice wheel at home this year. I'd like to hear how
others felt about the dinners. As far as breakfasts and lunches go, there
really isn't much you need to do to oatmeal and crackers & squeeze cheese.
BEARS!!! They were everywhere - fortunately always at a safe distance. We
saw three eating two dead horses near Beaubien. At Comanche Camp one walked
across the trail as we were headed to Mt. Phillips. On our second night at
Beaubien the camp director said every arriving crew that day reported a bear
sighting. Whatever you do don't take the warnings lightly.
I spoke with R.J. Benz in the Trading Post about his Philmont bear encounter
last summer. His scars speak louder than words.
Regarding modified treks - The word when I left was they were re-seeding the
North Country, checking bear cables, and re-building latrines with the hope
it could be re-opened in about two weeks. As crews come off the trail they
are recruiting and hiring as many people 18 and older as they can. They said
they would even consider 17 year olds in certain positions. They need both
youth and adults.
We had Trek 29 FM (Fire Modified). Only the first three days bore any
resemblance to the original trek. Do not try to negotiate changes in
Logistics. This is a difficult year. They are doing the best they can. None
of my crew complained. They all had fun and agreed it was better than what
we had planned. That's the right attitude.
Several camps were crowded (but not overly so) and sometimes crews had to
share a site and/or sump. Beaubien has 31 operational sites and there were
34 crews there one night.
